Ayurvedic Head Massage: An Ancient Indian Ritual For Stress Relief

Most of the time, people just take a quick shower, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and done. Showering and using highly perfumed soaps and shower gels replaces the ancient practice of oiling & bathing. Applying oil to the skin has a nourishing effect on both the body and mind. We’re getting inspiration from the past by suggesting ancient/forgotten rituals that can still be powerful today. Being mindful while brushing, oiling hair, and bathing can positively impact your mood - it’s less time thinking about work or what’s left on your to-do list.

Let’s get down to it. Here we’re sharing a simple routine of applying VAAY CBD massage oil & giving yourself an ayurvedic head massage once a week that can bring positive VAAYBES to your mind and body.

How To Give Yourself A Head Massage

Your head is made up of eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and there’s one more important part. It’s the soft part of the skull on a baby where the plates grow together over time. This area is known as the crown chakra or sahasrāra chakra in Sanskrit. Head Massage is rooted in Ayurveda. Here’s how to do it yourself.

Step 1: Warm the massage oil first in your hands or by placing the oil bottle in warm water for a few moments

Step 2: A head massage is in a seated position. Sit down in your most comfortable spot, closing your eyes and allowing yourself a moment to relax. Pay attention to your breathing.

Step 3: Apply enough oil so that your hair is covered with it (this should be between 5 - 20ml, depending on your hair length). Run your fingers through your scalp and hair inviting a grounded and relaxed feeling.

Step 4: Using your fingers and thumbs of both hands, begin to massage your head in small circular motions, being careful to avoid tangling your hair and taking in a deep breath as you do so. Start at your forehead and work your way back toward the crown chakra.

Gently pulling even portions of hair can also be soothing. As you massage, relax and think positive thoughts. Chakras can become blocked by negative energy, so a relaxing massage on your scalp will promote a healthy energy flow. On the out-breath, increase pressure with your fingers, repeating these steps as you proceed from the front of the head to the back and each side. Repeat and continue for 3 to 5 minutes.

Note: You can cover your head with a towel or shower cap and leave the oil in your hair overnight, or you could shampoo and rinse thoroughly after 15 minutes. Repeat this ritual once a week or as a special treat (after a stressful day). Head massages work on the upper three chakras (Crown, Third Eye and Throat).

Benefits Of A Head Massage

It promotes blood circulation in your head, nourishes your hair and scalp, and can help with headaches. It’s not recommended for those who experience migraines. The skin on the scalp is a direct path for CBD & other herbs to penetrate the tissues.

A head massage can be soothing by relieving tension in the scalp and neck. Alleviating stress can increase serotonin levels and also promote better sleep. A head massage also enhances your blood circulation, feeding the scalp and hair roots from the inside, which means shiny, healthy hair! Excellent news for those who struggle with dry, damaged hair. You can expect healthy, strong hair, soft, supple skin, & a relaxed mind, body & soul with this ritual. This is perfect remedy after a long stressful day or if you’re simply feeling sluggish. The power of mindfulness and physical touch is amazing.
